Bruce Springsteen, Suicide

Last night I dreamed Alan Vega cycled past my car's open window (in the rain) wearing a turqoise, red and black striped wooly rasta hat and shouted "Juicers!" at me.
I think that, and the 10" limited edition import that arrived today (Blast First Petite, UK) warrants a "dream" play-list next week.

22 Pistepirkko

The mail brought 3 cds from Finland today - the latest from 22 Pistepirkko, "(Well You Know) Stuff Is Like We Yeah!", their first EP "Ou Wee!" and "Monochromeset" by their cover version alter-egos, The Others which, quite brilliantly, opens with a rare Ray Davies classic "This Strange Effect". Somewhere in the back of my mind, I have a nagging feeling I might have brought this song to their manager, Tiina, a long time ago but don't take my word for it. Those days are hazy and I could be imagining it. I suggested this song to a few people back in the early 90s. Anyway, they do a terrific version (likely to chart next week!) and I'm going to enjoy listening to the rest of the package over the next few days. I once went to Helsinki to see 22P and they were fantastic. Lovely people, too. I did all the usual tourist stuff. Ate venison, drank lager, bought Stones bootlegs. They liked all the right music (Buddy, Beefheart, the blues, the Velvet Underground) and managed to sound like nothing I'd ever heard, then or since. I saw them in Amsterdam (they were good) and when they came to NYC in 91 to play a "Finland Rocks" night at CBGBs for the New Music Seminar, they managed to sound lost and out of place. Somehow that night, they couldn't find the magic and I couldn't persuade Elektra to open the chequebook. Too bad. They've released a series of wonderful records since the late 80's and regular listeners will recognize songs like "Swamp Blues", "Texacoson", "Birdy","Frankenstein", "Don't Play Cello", "Don't Say I'm So Evil", "This Time" and "Rally Of Love" when they hear them. Suicide's Martin Rev told me last month that he did some work on "Swamp Blues" so if anybody out there has a spare copy of their (now deleted) remix album, "Zipcode", let me know how much.

Suicide: Live '77-'78

For those that just can't get enough Suicide, Blast First Petite has just released a 6 cd box containing 13 shows recorded the year (or so) following the release of their classic debut. Some of the shows were recorded by me directly onto cassette, some by Eric Maché. Both of us were fans and recorded while standing in the audience. All the shows were mixed by Marty Thau and/or Charles Ball. Venues represented here include Max's Kansas City, the Palladium & CBGB's (NYC), The Music Machine (London), Eric's (Liverpool), Anciennes Belgiques (Brussels), the Olympia (Paris), Audiomax (Hamburg) and Kant Kino (Berlin).
Last Sunday afternoon, a group of people gathered downtown to celebrate Alan Vega's birthday (6/23). Folks flew in from Finland, London, and came from all over to be there. It was a pleasure seeing Alan looking so happy, surrounded by his family, Marty Rev,
friends, peers and admirers.

Every now and then you think about your life, what you would like to be, you start at Number 1 and you go down to 100. And down at the bottom, 100, was - Stage. Go figure. That would be the last thing. It terrified me, man. But I had to do it. - AV

"Suicide - The Future Of Music Since 1975..."

Suicide
Club Europa, Brookyn, May 15th '08

...that's what the voice said over the PA as Alan & Marty left the stage last night. The crowd clamored for more and a good 7 or 8 minutes later, the guys blessed us by playing 'Staying Alive' and a beautiful down-tempo piece straight outa the 50s probably called 'I Love You' for the encore.
It didn't used to be like that, as anyone checking out their "Live '77-'78" box set will hear. Sets used to end early and occasionally bloody. Sometimes they'd be ducking hurled objects (coins, shoes, chairs, the occasional axe) or fending off irate audience members. In Brussels, a mic was stolen right out of Alan's hand to curtail the set. Back then, the band would have to endure no end of abuse, humiliation, spit, violence and hatred just to be heard. Shame, really, because their underlying message is really about living. And love. That was then. Now, Suicide is on the top of their game and the audience loves them back.
